No Horsing Around

Each day we focus on a lesson, today’s lesson was how to lead without controlling. Anyone can scream and yell to control a crowd, but it takes a special type of skill in the relationship between leader and the public to be lead with out being controlled. Trust must be formed between the groups and today through our activities we learned this skill.
We started the day with morning prayer followed by our daily session of Ethics of our fathers. After this our group leaders announced a clean up of all our rooms, the beds had to be stripped, sheets folded, pillows out of the cases and all organized on two beds. This act teaches everyone how to take responsibility for their actions it also gave the group leaders a chance to lead the group without controlling it.
After breakfast we watched a short film on how leaders use different skills to lead. During the film some of the pioneers fell asleep and in order to wake everyone up we ran 2 laps around campus. While running we were told to chant ” we are not tired”. After this wake up we had Daniel the public speaking coach. We all agreed as a group that we love the way Daniel teaches us the art of public speaking and how excited we are to use these skills.
It was finally time to test our lesson of the day: we learned how to lead a horse without controlling it. It takes a trust between the rider and the horse to make both being go in the same direction. The other group herded Cattle. The cattle herding may seem like a joke but it does take a little bit of skill and time. We had to each align ourselves to pressure the animals into walking a certain direction, but not too pressuring so that they shouldn’t get scared and start going crazy. This meant we had to communicate with each other and learn the cattle’s reaction, and then the groups switched so that we were each able to experience both the amazing horseback riding and the cattle herding. Finally we arrived at our new camp site and set up camp. It was another good day on Ilead, and remember: no horsing around on Ilead 😉
